Department Profile – Economics
The Department of HR & Soft Skills is part of the Faculty of Management of the University and came into existence in 1995. The department is home to 54 faculty members and several research scholars who are involved in teaching, research and administration. Our faculty are multidisciplinary with backgrounds in management studies, psychology, Law and humanities. Thirty eight have PhDs with research credentials and others have extensive industry experience. The department has a strong focus on teaching and research, and for the faculty this means that they focus both on publishing in top academic journals as well as being able to communicate this in their teaching.

Teaching
The faculty contributes to teaching at the cross section of Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management courses as part of PhD in Management, MBA, Executive MBA, BBA and BA (Economics) programs of the University. They also help to build personal and social competencies of students on these programs by developing their soft skills. In addition, the department also contributes to the Case Research Centre and to the Management Development Programs of the Centre for Management Development of the University. Typical courses offered by the department are Organizational Behavior, HRM, Career Management, Soft Skills, Organizational Theory, Organizational Design & Development, Strategic HRM, Labor Laws, Human Resource Planning, Leadership & Change Management, Managerial Psychology, Corporate Communication, Training & Development, Performance Management and Reward Systems. In order to keep pace with the changing times the department has introduced several new courses like Agile HRM, HR Analytics, Positive Psychology and Employer Branding at the Master’s level and a course titled Technology in HRM at the Undergraduate level.


Research and Publications
The faculty conduct mixed methods research, with a focus on survey and qualitative data collected in different contexts. Faculty members’ research interests are wide ranging and focus on issues such as People analytics, Career Decision-making, job choice, sustainable HRM, Employer branding, Positive psychology at work, Diversity, Entrepreneurial success, Employee burnout, Workplace ostracism, Communication behaviors, Cognitive style and work types, and competency based HR approaches.


Since June 2016, Faculty members of the department have published 135 research papers in SCOPUS & ABDC indexed journals and 63 case studies that feature in the Case Centre, UK. The research publications are in reputed journals like International Journal of Manpower, Knowledge Management Research & Practice, Human Resource Management Review, Evidence based HRM, Australasian Journal of Information Systems, International Journal of Organizational Analysis, The Services Industries Journal and Employee Relations. Faculty have also published 48 books and 155 chapters in original/edited books during the same time. The Department brings out four peer-reviewed journal titled IUP Journal Management Research, IUP Journal of Organizational Behavior, IUP Journal of Corporate Governance, IUP Journal of Soft Skills and one magazine the HRM Review.

To facilitate intellectual exchange and knowledge diffusion, the department played host to several visiting scholars in the past few years who spent between a few hours to a few days teaching on campus. Conferences Organised

Recognition
Dr. Aviral Kumar Tiwari has been selected for the ‘Prof. M J Manohar Rao Award’ for the year 2014. The award instituted by The Indian Econometric Society (TIES) is given to young researchers below the age of 35 years, to encourage high quality research. The award was presented at the 52nd Annual Conference of the Indian Econometric Society, held at IIM, Kozhikode, during January 4-6, 2016.
