PhD Program in Economics (Full-time)

The Ph.D. Program in Economics is a full-time, residential program designed for students who intend to pursue teaching economics, research, and professional career. The objective of the program is to develop students’ capabilities in using the theoretical and empirical techniques needed to analyze real-world economic problems.


Program Structure

The program has five phases and can be completed in four years.

The performance of the students in each stage is assessed by means of continuous evaluation.

Course Work

The first year is devoted to course work which includes micro and macro economics, econometrics, development economics and policy, international trade and theory of finance. The course work paves the way to develop doctoral thesis.

Pedagogy

This involves a few workshops on soft skills, teaching aids, institutional development, student evaluation and feedback, student counseling, curriculum design and courseware development, executive development programs and consulting.

Qualifying Examination

At the end of the first year the students appear for the Ph.D. qualifying examination. It consists of written examination followed by viva-voce. The examination tests the students’ knowledge in the prescribed areas and their ability to apply the same in research.

Thesis

On completion of the qualifying examination, the student prepares for the Ph.D. thesis proposal under the guidance of a Doctoral Advisory Committee. Subsequently the student will defend the thesis proposal before a screening committee and proceed towards completion of the thesis by the end of the fourth year.

Stipend

Students will be paid an assistantship of Rs. 20,000 per month till they defend the thesis proposal. After successful defense of thesis proposal, an assistantship of Rs 35,000 per month will be paid till they complete four years. The Research Scholars are required to provide support for teaching/research/administrative activities of the University for up to 10 hours a week. Advanced Ph.D. students may be provided with teaching opportunities for additional emoluments. Students successfully completing the Ph.D. Program can pursue their careers in any organization of their choice. They may also apply to IBS Hyderabad based on the vacancies available.

ADMISSION MODALITIES


Eligibility

PG in Economics or an allied discipline with 60% marks from an UGC approved university. All applicants should have completed a minimum of 17 years of regular education (on 10+2+3+2 or 10+2+4+2 basis).

Applicants who have completed their graduation/Post graduation on one time sitting basis or on part time, distance mode or online mode are not eligible for PhD program of IBS Hyderabad.

Candidates not meeting the eligibility criteria of English medium in graduation and/ or post graduation have to submit the TOEFL/ NELT/ IELTS score by May 31, 2015.

Eligibility criteria will be checked from August, 2015 onwards. Hence, the onus of ensuring that they satisfy the eligibility criteria rests solely with the candidates.

Admission Procedure

The candidates seeking admission to PhD program (Full time/ Part time) offered by IBS Hyderabad have to appear for IBSAT 2014.

IBSAT 2014

IBSAT is an online aptitude test conducted by The ICFAI Foundation For Higher Education (a deemed to be University under Section 3 of UGC act 1956), for students seeking admission to the MBA/PhD programs of IBS Hyderabad. IBSAT 2014 is an aptitude test based on Computer Based Test (CBT) format. The test is of 2 hours duration and is conducted in 4-5 sessions per day at test centers across India.

GMAT® scores (from 2011 onwards) and CAT 2014 scores are also accepted . Candidates with GMAT® score of 500 and above and CAT percentile of 60 and above are exempted from IBSAT 2014.

Selection Briefings

Selection briefings are conducted for the qualified candidates in 40 cities across the country to clarify various aspects related to the programs of IBS.


Selection Process

The candidates who are shortlisted based on IBSAT/ GMAT/ CAT are called for selection process at IBS Hyderabad in March 2015. The final selection is based on a Technical Interview and a Personal Interview.

Fee Structure

Ph.D Program (Full Time)
The fee for the 4 year Ph.D program is Rs 1.30 lakhs per annum.

Full time Ph.D students have to pay Rs. 40000 towards admission fee. The semester fee of Rs 60000 per semester for 8 semesters is waived off subject to meeting specific academic requirements.

The full time Ph.D students will be paid a scholarship of Rs 20000 per month.

Students are expected to have their own laptops at the time of reporting to IBS.

Accommodation:

On-campus single accommodation is provided to the students. Students who are married may opt to stay outside the campus. The accommodation and mess expenses are to be borne by the students.

June 1, 2015.
